The Indian Postal Service (English: India Post) is a postal service operated by the Government of India under the brand name India. India Post is emerging as a society committed, technology driven and visionary organization moving away from its conventional image. India has a vast network of 1,55,015 post offices, of which 1,39,144 are in rural areas, which is the largest network of post offices in the world. To meet the demand of those places where the Department of Posts has not been able to open post offices, services of 850 post offices are being provided so far. This system is not only helping in fulfilling the social responsibility of providing essential postal services to all citizens but also acting as a catalyst for economic activities in these areas. Through the progressive use of computers and a one-stop-channel connectivity system, the Post Office provides a unified mode of delivery of retail products and other services through India Post. As the postal format changes, there has been a substantial increase in the spread of postal service in the categories of consumer to business and business to other business locations. The expectations of the common people in terms of services and facilities are continuously increasing and this is changing the economic scenario. Governments and corporate sectors have started using India Post's vast network and credibility to reach out to the common people. Some of the services provided through post offices are as follows:- National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) – The post offices of the Department of Posts have been entrusted with the responsibility of paying salaries to the beneficiaries of NREGS through Post Office Savings Bank Account. This type of service has been started in 2006 from Andhra Pradesh Postal Circle. Salary payment under NREGS is presently applicable in 19 Postal Circles in 21 States. This scheme is being operated through one lakh post offices. Around 4.9 crore (5.04) NREGS accounts have been opened since March 2011 (July 2011) and Rs 7300 crore has been disbursed during this financial year alone. *Tie up with SBI – India Post has tied up with State Bank of India to sell its assets and deliverables through designated post offices. Initially the scheme was launched in five states. Later it was also started in 23 states and union territories. The total number of different types of accounts opened reached 1.04 lakh and the total assets sold reached Rs 17 crore. Tie up with NABARD – Department of Posts in association with NABARD will provide micro credit facility to Self Help Groups (SHGs) through identified post offices on agency basis with NABARD. Later this scheme will also be implemented in 23 states and union territories. The total number of different types of accounts opened has gone up to 1.04 lakhs and the total sales assets have gone up to Rs.17 crores. Department of Posts, in association with NABARD, is providing micro credit facility to Self Help Groups through identified post offices on agency basis. As an experiment, its work is being conducted in five districts. Seven divisions of Tamil Nadu circle are being included in this. The assistance amount of this revolving fund has been increased to 3 crores. 1,200 self-help groups are getting benefit from this scheme. Sale of Gold Coins - Sale of Gold Coins in association with Reliance Money Limited was started in October, 2008 at select Post Offices. The scheme is available in 672 post offices in 21 states. Old age pension - Old age pension being paid through 20 lakh post office savings accounts in Bihar, Delhi, Jharkhand and North-Eastern states and through money orders in Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu Is. Online acceptance of RTI applications - Department of Posts is assisting other public authorities under the Central Government in the implementation of the Right to Information Act. It is providing services through Central Assistant Public Information Officers. Tehsil level Deputy Post Master is working as Central Assistant Public Information Officer and accepting RTI requests and applications.
